Social Media

Also, include an example from either the IUPUI School Facebook or Twitter postings.

Social media to me is a concept that I think is kinda ridiculous, just because sometimes it is just a collection of memes, pictures of babies, or people going on and on about their day. But maybe I am a masochist because I subscribe to all of the following: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest. I use all the them in very different ways. Facebook is a way to connect to family members and old friends that have moved to the other side of the world. There are a significant portion of my friends on Facebook that post links to political or scholarly articles so sometimes I will use it for news. Twitter is probably currently one of my favorite social media websites. I follow mostly all educational institutions and then retweet or like articles that I intend to read later when I get home and put on some pajamas. I get mostly all of my news from Twitter. I follow a large chunk of historical institutions or magazines, the Smithsonian Institute, NPR and the NYTimes.

Social media and libraries go very well together. Pinterest is a create site to use while working at the library. Whenever I make a display bulletin board or book display, I make sure to go to Pinterest to get ideas for displays and crafts. This is a godsend to me because I am not a crafty person so I love seeing a step by step guide to do these crafts. I started following my library when I started working for them and realized that they had social media sites. This is a great idea for libraries to be on social media because I work at one branch of a collection of 9 in our system so seeing on Facebook that an interesting event is going on at a library in the next town over is beneficial to me as a patron that would like to attend that program. Going to IUPUI Facebook page, they had a link promoting that their program manager won Outstanding Woman Leader.
